Silicon wafers just took their first across
12-inch wafer prices rose 10%+ in the first broad hike since 2023, AI/HPC-grade wafers are up 18–22%, and lead times stretch past 2027. What the second wave of increases means for electronics buyers.
Silicon wafers just took their first across-the-board price hike in three years. The cost floor under every chip you buy — including the boring ones — is moving.
12-inch polished wafer contract prices are up 10%+this month, 8-inch wafers are negotiating ~10% increases for 2027, and 6-inch is following. Shin-Etsu, SUMCO and GlobalWafers raised 12-inch regular wafers 5–8% and AI/HPC-grade wafers 18–22% back in May — this is the second wave since August. Lead times tell the same story: 78–156 weeks for leading-edge logic, 40–50 weeks for STMicro's core MCUs, with MLCC passives already in shortage. The math behind it: an AI server consumes 3.8x the 12-inch wafer demand of a standard server, and 2026 demand runs ~ 11M wafers/month against effective supply under 10M. Chinese chipmakers followed — MCUs up 10–20% , power semis 15–25% , effective Sept 1.
The pinch hits mature-node chips first — power management, MCUs, analog — because AI is siphoning fab capacity away from exactly those lines. If your BOM touches consumer electronics, appliances, or industrial controls, expect re-quotes and allocation notices in Q4. Second sources beat price haggling right now.
Truve will continuously collect and monitor information on production capacity, inventory, and price increases in Chinese factories - this way, you will be able to learn about price increases before the supplier's email arrives.
